This year's allergy season ranks as one of the worst ones on record. Tree pollens, mold spores, and ragweed counts are off the charts, which means a lot of us are having a rough time this season!

When seasonal allergies affect our eyes we experience a whole host of symptoms, most often itchy eyes, but also watery, red, and dry eyes. And about half of Moscot's contact lens patients complain that their lenses are uncomfortable during this season. Many patients aren't even aware that they suffer from mild eye allergies and therefore suffer needlessly instead of seeking help.

Many patients believe that allergy pills such as Claritin or Allegra will help alleviate eye symptoms, when in fact the opposite is true -- these medications can actually exacerbate eye problems. Antihistamines may alleviate a runny nose, but they will dry out your eyes and reduce tear production in the process, making your eyes even more itchy and uncomfortable.

The good news is that there is help! We can prescribe medications that safely and effectively eliminate the symptoms of eye allergies and enable contact lens patients, and non contact lens patients, to feel better fast.

Prescription allergy eye drops will eliminate the itchiness without the drying effect to keep your eyes feeling comfortable and allow contact lens wearers to resume normal use. Drops should be started before the allergy season begins and used every day throughout the season to be most effective.

And it's important to keep your eyes lubricated with an unpreserved artificial tear available "over the counter" at your local drug store. The lubrication will help flush out the pollen particles that land in your eyes to reduce irritation.
